What's happening at Mole Creek Lodge
Autumn's arrived
Officially, today is the first day of autumn but we have felt the change over the past few days, with that delicious crispness in the air in the mornings.
Mole Creek Lodge will soon feature HD TV/DVD combos in guest rooms. We have resisted having TVs anywhere except in the guest lounge until now, because we don't like to encourage people to hide away in their rooms, but have decided to give you a choice!
Watch out for our special offers, coming soon for autumn and winter.

It's been a long, hot summer
Since Christmas we have had a long series of hot days and virtually no rain - until yesterday, when we had a wonderful day of steady rain (about half an inch in the old money). Now everything has freshened up, the grass has instantly taken on a fresh green tinge, and it looks more like the Mole Creek we love.
The rain's gone now and the sky is once more cloudless - and we are really glad we airconditioned all the guest areas before this summer started!
The foals are 3 months old now and growing like weeds.

A fascinating snippet of old Mole Creek news!
Last night Helen Rogers, a historian from the UK, stayed with us here at Mole Creek Lodge. Helen is researching a group of convicts who, over a period of a few years around 1840, spent time in Yarmouth Prison. Mainly petty offenders, some were transported to Van Diemans Land. Helen's visit to Mole Creek was aimed at trying to find any local lore about one such prisoner, Isaac Riches, who met an untimely end here, and, if possible, to locate his final resting place.
Briefly, Isaac Riches found his way to Mole Creek after being released from Port Arthur. Here he co-habited with Hannah, who took his name although there is no record of a marriage having taken place, and the two lived in a hut with a man by the name of John Lambert. In November 1875, Hannah was found murdered and Isaac close to death after being bludgeoned with an iron poker. He died of his injuries a few days later. John Lambert was found hanged nearby. The official verdict was double murder and suicide - and there ended the sad history of Isaac Riches.
Helen kindly supplied copies of extracts from the Melbourne Argus and Hobart Mercury newspapers from that time. They are a bit hard to read, so I have made a transcript.
And if anyone knows where Isaac Riches is buried or has any more written or anecdotal information to add to this story, please do contact me and I will pass your details on to Helen.

Two new arrivals at Mole Creek Lodge
In the past week our two mares have both safely delivered beautiful filly foals. We have been watching them anxiously from every north facing window for the past few weeks and both kept us waiting by being overdue. They are here now and have enjoyed the attention of a number of guests already!

New garden area
Kirk has been very busy, with a little help from me, reclaiming an area behind the house from the goats and transforming it into a lovely garden area where guests can relax in the shade of the beautiful silver birch tree - or soak up a little sun, if that's their preference. It's coming along a treat and Kirk, Matilda, Willie and I plan to enjoy it too!

My beautiful birthday present
Kirk has been resisting getting a second dog ever since we arrived here but I finally managed to break him down by refusing to accept anything else for my birthday this year. We went to the Devonport Dogs Home where we found a wonderful 3 year old Labrador called Matilda.
Matilda loves everybody and is a great favourite with guests - especially those who are missing their own pets while they are away from home.
