The Great Western Tiers cycle trails
Read about the Great Caves Ride in the July 2010 edition of Australian Cyclist.
Cycling is one of the best ways to enjoy the sights and sounds of Tasmania. Here in the Great Western Tiers four cycle trails have been developed for the especial enjoyment of cyclists. The four trails are marked by special roadside bollards and maps are available in hard copy from Visitor Information Centres in both Mole Creek and Deloraine, as well as online. The bollards are numbered and each number corresponds to a podcast which may be downloaded via the links below. General information to enhance your safe enjoyment of these rides may be found here. The Great Caves Ride
This ride is best enjoyed over two days (covering 72 km on one day and 54 km on the other), taking time to enjoy the sights and attractions along the way, including Mole Creek's famous caves, Trowunna Wildlife Park and spectacular Alum Cliffs. Mole Creek Lodge is located on the route of the Great Caves Ride. More details of the Great Caves Ride, including map and links to podcasts.
The Great Country Ride
This 56 km ride is relatively easy, taking in the flatter areas of the Meander Valley where historic towns are scattered amongst picturesque farmland. More details of the Great Country Ride, including map and links to podcasts.
The Great World Heritage Ride
This is a challenging 60 km ride involving some steep ascents and descents, the final stage to Liffey Falls being suitable for hybrid and mountain bikes only. More details of the Great World Heritage Ride, including maps and link to podcast.
The Great Gourmet Ride
You will want to save this one until last, to reward yourself for taking up the challenge of the preceding days. This ride is all about good food, with tastings at some of Australia's leading gourmet producers - including Ashgrove Farm Chees, Christmas Hills Raspberry Farm and 41 Degrees South Salmon Farm. More details of the Great Gourmet Ride, including map and link to podcast.
Accommodation and facilities for cyclists at Mole Creek Lodge
Here at Mole Creek Lodge we understand that cyclists have special needs and we will do our best to make your stay comfortable. Cyclists will particularly appreciate the hearty breakfasts we offer to all our guests (including great plunger coffee) and other regular features of our accommodation, plus, especially for you -
secure storage for your bike
- bike washing facilities
- maps and information about The Great Western Tiers Cycle Trails
- detailed local information about what to see and do along the way
- local knowledge about other cycling-friendly businesses and services
- and, as we are 5 km from the nearest restaurant (and we realise that at the end of a long day's touring you may not wish to tackle a 10 km round trip for your evening meal), for cyclists only we offer a platter-style evening feast of local gourmet produce
We invite you to contact us if you would like further information or have any other special needs, such as pickups or luggage transfers, that you would like to discuss.
